Funding Provided to Thiokol Memorial Project

Nonprofit funding

At their January 17, 2023, regular meeting, the Camden County Board of Commissioners approved an agreement for tourism promotion activities between the Board of Commissioners and the Thiokol Memorial Project, Inc (TMP). The $20,000 in funding is made available through Camden County’s Hotel-Motel Tax. The agreement is for one year beginning on February 1, 2023, and renews annually.

“This is an important step in remembering and sharing Camden County’s history,” said Chairman Ben Casey. “We want to ensure that our residents and visitors to our community are able to learn about the role our citizens played in the Vietnam War.”

Constructed in 1964, the Thiokol Chemical plant originally built and tested solid propellant rocket motors for NASA at their site at the end of Harrietts Bluff Road in east central Camden County. However, by 1969, the plant began to make trip flares for the Vietnam War. On February 3, 1971, a fire ignited causing an explosion that killed 29 workers and injured many more.

Annually on February 3rd, TMP hosts a service paying tribute to the workers who lost their life at the Thiokol plant. The 52nd Anniversary Ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the Camden County PSA Complex located at 1050 Wildcat Drive in Kingsland.

In 2017, TMP established the Thiokol Memorial Museum, located at 115 S. Lee Street in Kingsland. The museum is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. More information is available on their website, http://thiokolmemorial.org
