Although the holiday season is almost here, it’s never too early to give thanks by giving back. From October 27-November 3, there will be two donation drives—a clothing drive and food drive to benefit the local community and communities throughout Georgia.
Student groups in English Composition 1101, taught by Assistant Professor of English Dr. Mary McGinnis, are hosting the two drives as service-learning projects. The drives will not only help those in need, but will also give students an experience in project management and organization.
The food drive is being led by freshmen Sarah Pullum, Lanie Sharpe, Janette Matus-Martinez, and Josué Julían-Rodriguez. The collected items will be given to St. Vincent de Paul, which hosts a Food Recovery and Distribution program that provides for their 40 food pantries throughout Georgia.
For the food drive, please donate:
- Pop-top canned goods (vegetables, fruits, soups, etc.)
- Pasta and rice
- Shelf-stable dairy (powdered milk, powdered milk alternatives)
- Any other non-perishables
- Fresh produce
- Fresh meats
- Refrigerated dairy
- Any other perishable items
Through organizing this drive, students have been able to practice formal writing, develop effective communication skills, and learn how to stay motivated through difficult situations.
The clothing drive is being led by freshmen Marge Ihde, Sydney Henry, and Brooke Wegma to benefit Safe Harbor, a non-profit organization that helps at-risk students in Glynn County schools and works with the Glynn County Community Crisis Center. The youth in these programs are able to go to Safe Harbor and shop for free with a voucher.
For the clothing drive, please donate:
- Shirts
- Pants
- Shoes
- Socks
Students are looking forward to giving Safe Harbor a box full of clothes. They shared that through the project, so far, they’ve learned how to be better team players, how to communicate, and the dynamics of leadership.
There's always an opportunity to give. Here are some ongoing campus drives:
COMPASS Career Closet, a professional attire closet for students. Please donate:
- Any gently worn professional attire in both men’s and women’s clothing
- Suits
- Jackets, blazers
- Slacks, skirts
- Shirts, blouses
- Belts, ties, and other accessories
The Deck Campus Pantry accepts clothing, canned goods, non-perishable items, and toiletries. Those wishing to donate can email sga@ccga.edu.
