On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, a ceremony will be held to honor the lives and memories of hundreds of people who have died in Chatham County, whose cremated remains are unclaimed.
Some of the cremains date back to the 1940’s. Chatham County Coroner David Campbell, Sr. said since taking office, it’s been a priority of his, as well as the Chatham County Board of Commissioners and County Manager’s Office to honor the deceased with a proper ceremony and burial.
“It’s very important to me, because the death care industry has always been my passion for the last forty-plus years. So, to give them a decent, dignified burial makes me feel good,” Campbell said.
Campbell said those remains, which account for more than 500 people, will be laid to rest in Greenwich Cemetery at Bonaventure. Each vault the cremains are placed in will have a granite slab that includes the names of the deceased.
Campbell said, “They are loved ones to people, to someone. And we feel like instead of just throwing them in a grave, or desecrating them, we’re just going to give them a proper burial.”
The ceremony will include scripture readings from the New and Old Testament, musical selections and remarks from Chairman Ellis and Coroner Campbell.
Clergy from nearly twenty Chatham County churches have also been invited to attend, and the public is invited as well.
