Southeast Georgia Health System Goes "Transparent" With Physician Star Ratings & Reviews

Southeast Georgia Health System measures the quality of patients’ hospital visits and physician practice experiences through nationally standardized surveys. In an effort to give the community unbiased insight into patient experiences, the Health System is now displaying patient survey responses as star ratings and anonymous reviews on its Find a Provider directory for employed, Southeast Georgia Physician Associate providers.

“Choosing a health care provider can feel overwhelming,” says Adam Brown, director, Physician Practices. “To help with the decision-making process, we’ve gone ‘transparent,’ displaying ratings and reviews from real patients based on their first-hand experiences with our physicians.”

Eligible patients may receive a paper or electronic survey following their hospital stay, outpatient surgery, Emergency Care Center visit or physician appointment. These surveys do a deep dive into the care patients receive and include questions regarding communication with their doctors, understanding their medication instructions, and the coordination of their health care needs.

“We use the responses from these surveys to identify areas of opportunity and highlight areas of excellence within our organization,” says Natalie McBride, director, Patient Experience. “Physicians with 30 or more reviews or more will have a star-rating and comments displayed on their profile. In this way, we ensure a well-rounded number of true patient experiences comprise the physician’s star rating.”

The Health System strives to remain unbiased and showcase both positive and negative comments about our providers. However, comments that are slanderous, profane, jeopardize patient privacy by providing protected health information, or do not directly mention the care received by the provider are not shared.
