The Camden County Board of Commissioners, in a partnership with the City of St. Marys, are providing swimming lessons to Camden County children at no cost to the participants. Camden County and the City of St. Marys each dedicated $12,500 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) revenue loss funds to the program.
Lessons will be provided by the Camden County Public Service Authority (PSA) in their heated pool. Registration will take place September 1-15, 2022, by contacting the PSA at 912-729-5600 or by visiting them at 1050 Wildcat Drive in Kingsland. The combined $25,000 in funding will provide 200 children with no cost swimming lessons.
“We are excited to bring this program to Camden County’s children,” said Chairman Gary Blount. “As a coastal community, it is vital that our youngest residents are able to safely enjoy our natural resources by learning these lifelong skills.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14. Each day in the US 11 children die of drowning and another 22 suffer non-fatal drowning injuries that can lead to permanent disabilities.
