After a two year hiatus due to COVID-19, Southeast Georgia Health System will relaunch its Better Breathers Club with a free Community Lunch & Learn – Better Sleep, Better Breathers. Featuring guest speaker Avinesh Singh Bhar, M.D., fellowship-trained and board-certified sleep and pulmonary medicine physician, the event will take place in the Health System’s Brunswick Campus Linda S. Pinson Conference Center on Tuesday, July 19, 12-1 p.m.
The Better Breathers Club is a support group for patients with chronic lung conditions, including COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer. Led by a trained facilitator, the goal of the group is to improve club members’ quality of life by providing disease-specific education and emotional connection. This may prevent the need for additional medical care, thereby reducing the health, economic and social burden of lung disease.
Everyone is welcome to attend the free Lunch & Learn. Starting August 18, Better Breathers Club members will meet monthly on the third Thursday, 4-5 p.m., in the Health System’s Cardiac Rehabilitation education room. Meetings will include educational presentations on a wide range of relevant topics, including:
- How COPD affects the lungs
- Asthma education
- Exercise
- Talking with your physician
- Medications and other treatment options
- Medical tests
- Supplemental oxygen
- Home health care
- Lung transplants
- Smoking cessation
- Emotional and social well-being
