The dream season for Brunswick girls basketball continued last week as the team posted three lopsided wins to improve to 16-0.
On Jan. 11, Richmond Hill came to town and Brunswick was ready, coming out of the gate with a 16-8 lead and a 35-16 lead at the half. Brunswick outscored Richmond Hill 21-17 in the third quarter and while Richmond Hill outscored the Pirates 9-6 in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late for the Wildcats.
Shakardia Cowart had 10 points and five assists and Shane Jackson just missed a double/double with nine points, 10 boards and three blocks. Shania Jones and Shamya Flanders each had 10 points.
On Jan. 14, Brunswick dominated Statesboro in a 68-38 win in which the Pirates once again led from the start and never let up. It was a 36-16 game at the half and Brunswick ran away with things, outscoring Statesboro 22-11 in the third quarter before keeping even in the fourth.
Shane Jackson led the way with 12 points and seven boards. Cocoa Ramsey added 11 points.
The main difference-maker was defense with Brunswick posting 17 steals while Coffee had only seven.
On Jan. 15, Brunswick took a 57-30 win over Coffee in a game in which the Pirates outshot the Trojans 42% to 33%. The Pirates led all game, going up 28-10 at the half and never looking back.
According to the Pirate Twitter page, Shane Jackson posted a double-double in the win with 11 points and 10 boards, as well as five blocks.
The Lady Pirates have outscored opponents 1,049 to 571 this season.
Brunsiwick boys take two of three, improve to 10-5
The Brunswick boys’ basketball team improved to 10-5, taking two of three games last week.
On Jan. 11, the Pirates knocked off Richmond Hill 67-62. After leading by a point in the first quarter Richmond Hill battled in the second quarter to take a 29-26 lead at halftime. Brunswick came out hot in the third quarter 22-14 and stuck even with Richmond Hill 19-19 in the fourth quarter to hold on for a five-point victory.
Jason Newmans posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Camarion Johnson had 14 points and Alston had 12 points. Riyon Rankin had an excellent all-around game with 13 points, eight boards and two blocks.
Teh boys followed up two days later, and on Jan. 14 Brunswick suffered a tough loss to Statesboro 54-46. The first half was anyone’s game with Brunswick leading 27-25, but Statesboro turned things around in the third quarter 15-7 which proved to be the difference-making quarter in the game.
Newmans led Pirate scorers with 12 points and Saje Alston had a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.
The Pirates ended the week the following day with a solid win over Coffee Jan. 15, by a score of 80-66.
The Pirates dominated the first half, coming out hot in the first quarter up 17-6 and expanded that lead to 40-23 at halftime. Coffee battled in the third quarter outscoring the Pirates 25-17, but Brunswick turned things around in the final frame to take the win on its home court.
According to the team’s Twitter page, Newmans had a double-double with 21 points, 11 boards, two assists and two steals. Alston had his second double-double in two nights, with 20 points, 18 rebounds and two blocks. Johnson had 11 points and six assists in the win.
