The Brunswick girls basketball team has had a dominant season so far, winning 13 straight games with two 30-point routs over South Effingham and Coffee.
On Jan. 7, the Pirates completed a blowout win on the road against South Effingham, with a 67-32 romp.
Brunswick went up big early with a 16-5 first quarter, and controlled an 18-11 second frame to make it a 34-16 game at halftime. The Pirates never let up and outscored Coffee 23-7 in the third and then 10-9 in the final frame.
Shamya Flanders had a double/double to lead the way for the Lady Pirates with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cocoa Ramsey was the high scorer with 20 points and 5 assists.
The next day, Jan. 8, Brunswick improved to 13-0 with a 67-33 demolition of Coffee High School.
It was all Brunswick from the start, with a 17-2 advantage in the first quarter followed by 21-12 in the second, to go up 38-14 at the half. The third quarter continued the romp with a 19-10 advantage for Brunswick, and the Pirates cruised to victory, outscoring Coffee 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
The Pirates out-rebounded Brunswick 42 to 32 in the win, and also had 23 steals to 10 for Coffee.
Leading the way was Flanders, who was the top scorer with 18 points, and was also big on the glass with eight rebounds. Jamya West had a good all-around performance with eight points to go with seven boards.
Brunwsick Boys improve to 8-4 with 15-point wins over South Effingham and Coffee
The Brunswick boys basketball team traveled to South Effingham on Jan. 7 and won by 15 points, 78-63.
Brunswick went up 18-10 in the first quarter, but was outscored in the second quarter 27-24 to make it a 42-37 game at the half. Brunswick cruised in the second half outscoring South Effingham in both frames -- 15-12 in the third quarter and 21-14 in the fourth.
Brunswick shot 46% from the field to 37% for South Effingham. Rebounds were a huge difference-maker with Brunswick ripping down 52 boards to 37 for South Effingham. Brunswick also had 21 assists to only eight for the Mustangs.
Jason Newmans led the way for the Pirates with 20 points and eight boards. Camarion Johnson had 17 points and seven assists and Kevin Thomas Jr. finished with 12 points and eight boards to go with a block.
The following night, The Brunswick boys’ basketball squad improved to 8-4 with its third straight win, another 15-point victory, 67-52 over Coffee on Jan. 8.
Brunswick was up 16-11 after one quarter and then ran away with things in the second quarter scoring 24 points and holding Coffee to 11 points to go up 40-22 at the half. Brunswick had a 16-14 advantage in the third quarter and while Coffee battled in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brunswick 16-11. the Pirates held on for the victory.
According to the team’s Twitter page, Saje Alston scored 15 points and had 17 rebounds in a huge double/double. He also had a pair of blocks.
Johnson led scorers with 21 points and five assists. Newmans had seven points, 10 boards and five assists while Riyon Rankin just missed a double/double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
