The Brunswick girls’ basketball team improved to 8-0 and with a 78-76 win over Wesleyan at the United Bank Holiday Invitation in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Dec. 21, as the Pirates became tournament champions, according to the team’s Twitter page.
Wesleyan was up 21-20 after a quarter but Brunswick took a one-point lead by halftime with a score of 35-34. The third quarter had a one-point advantage for Brunswick and both teams scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to give Brunswick the two-point win.
Shane Jackson had an incredible double/double with 18 points and 20 boards and Jamya West scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for a double/double of her own. Shamya Flanders had 17 points and eight rebounds. Shakardia Cowart had 14 points and six assists.
Brunswick had two other wins in the tournament as well. On Dec. 18 the Lady Pirates handed Waccamaw of Pawley’s Island, S.C. a 74-21 loss. Leading the way was Cowart with 16 points, six boards and give steals. Flanders had 15 points, seven rebounds and an assist.
On Dec. 20 the Pirates beat Military Magnet Academy in the semifinal game. Shanyece Quick was the top scorer with 10 points. Jamya West had nine points and seven boards. Shane Jackson scored three points but filled the stat sheet with six boards and six blocks. Cowart had four points and seven rebounds.
Brunswick boys' basketball team starts 5-3
The Brunswick boys' basketball team came away with a 58-57 comeback win over Fletcher of Neptune Beach Florida during the Battle of the Islands tournament at Fleming Island High School on Dec. 21.
The game was close in the first half with Brunswick up 32-31 but Fletcher had a strong third quarter outscoring the Pirates 16-10. Brunswick matched Fletcher’s 16-10 run in the final frame to come away with the one-point victory.
According to the team’s Twitter page, Saje Alston led the way with a 19-point showing to go along with eight boards and three blocks. Camarion Johnson had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Riyon Rankin scored 19 points and had eight rebounds and three blocks.
On Dec. 22 the Pirates took on Lakeland in the second game of the tournament and fell 59-46 thanks for a big first quarter for Lakeland. Lakeland went up 24-13 on the first quarter two set the tone and while the rest of the way was even, Lakeland managed to hold off the Pirates.
Brunswick now has a 5-3 record in the young season.
