Southeast Georgia Health System issued the following announcement on Dec. 14.

Southeast Georgia Health System recently presented The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses to Christina Miller, R.N., in recognition of the kindness and compassion she provides every day to her patients.

Christina Miller, R.N., a registered nurse in the Cancer Care Center on the Brunswick Campus, was nominated for The DAISY Award by one of her patients, Lillian Miller.

Excerpts from Miller’s nomination include, “At 85, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although the doctors and nurses at the Health System are exceptional people, one nurse truly made my year of treatment a pleasurable journey. Christina reassured me through the course of chemo-radiation, multiple scans, shots and medical tests. Going through this process was not easy to navigate, but Christina became more than a nurse to me - she became part of the family to us. She knew me and my hobbies, habits and my favorite books, and she always brought me hot tea upon my arrival. She was more than a compassionate nurse, always making me comfortable with heated blankets and hot meals during my visits. Her infectious smile and warm-hearted stories were very encouraging. She made me laugh often, and discovered that she had actually visited my house when she was a teenager. The cliché “it's a small world” has never been truer. In summary, Christina not only answered all of my questions, she served me in a manner that is above and beyond for the entire year of treatment. I will never forget Christina’s kindness, compassion, generosity and friendship. I can honestly say that I won’t miss the treatments, but I will certainly miss her! She is by far one of the best people that I have ever met, and I continue to call her my friend. This journey has forged two kindred souls together and she will be forever in my heart. Thank you Christina for everything you do today and always for your patients.”

Miller also received “A Healer’s Touch” sculpture, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa, and Grandy’s Sinnamon® Rolls, donated by owners, and siblings, Paul and Mary Kay Spence.

Created by The DAISY Foundation™—an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System—The DAISY Award was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and the patients’ family and friends.

Nurses can be nominated for The DAISY Award online at sghs.org/daisy-award, or nominations may be placed in DAISY boxes located throughout the Health System’s Brunswick and Camden campuses. A committee consisting of Health System team members, including clinical and non-clinical staff, leadership, medical staff and board members, review the nominations and determine The DAISY Award recipient(s). Awards are given monthly throughout the year.
