Brunswick boys win one, lose two heartbreakers to bring record to 4-2

The Brunswick Pirates dropped a heartbreaker at home to the Effingham County Rebels by a score of 64-62 on Dec. 14 to bring the team’s record to 4-2.

Brunswick had a 21-13 lead to start the game in the first quarter but Effingham County followed with a quarter where the Rebels outscored the Pirates 22-16, and Brunswick had a 37-35 lead at the half. Brunswick extended the lead to three after three quarters but Effingham County put up a great fourth quarter outscoring the Pirates 14-9 to take the victory.

According to the team’s Twitter page, Saje Alston scored 22 points and had eight rebounds for the Pirates. Camarion Johnson scored 16 points and had four assists and four steals. Riyon Rankin had 15 points, seven boards, three steals and a block. Jason Newmans had nine points and nine rebounds.

Pirates beat McIntosh

The Pirates had a convincing 75-58 victory over McIntosh County Academy on Saturday.

The game kicked off with a quick three-pointer by McIntosh County’s Will Philmore to go up 3-0 but Mikey Thomas, Newmans and Rankins of Brunswick followed four straight buckets to go up 8-3. Rankins had back-to-back scores. McIntosh battled and took a 12-10 lead on a TJ Jackson three pointer but J’maun Weldon tied it up at 12-12 as time was winding down. Will Jones of McIntosh drained a bucket to go up 14-12 but as time was winding down Alston hit a shot to tie the game 14-14.

The second quarter started with two straight shots made by Camarion Johnson and Rankin of Brunswick to go up 18-14 but McIntosh continued to battle and got within one with a score of 20-19. It was 30-24 at the half and still anyone’s game.

The third quarter got away from McIntosh quickly with Brunswick outscoring its opposition 29-14 en route to a 59-38 score by the end of the frame. It was nicely distributed scoring led by Johnson’s eight points. In the quarter Rankins had six points, Thomas had six points and Alston had seven points.

Despite McIntosh putting up 20 points compared to 16 for Brunswick in the fourth quarter, it was far too big of a lead to overcome and Brunswick walked away with a 17-point victory.

According to the team’s Twitter page, Johnson finished the night with 16 points, six boards and three steals. Rankin had 16 points and three steals. Thomas added 10 points, Alston had nine points and Jason Newmans had a solid night on the glass with 11 boards.

Brunswick edged by Glynn

On Dec. 10 Brunswick lost a tight one to Glynn Academy by a score of 47-46. Glynn Academy was up 22-11 after a quarter but Brunswick followed up with solid second and third quarters outscoring Glynn 12-8 and 15-7 respectively.

Brunswick held a 39-37 lead in the fourth quarter but Glynn Academy battled to outscore Brunswick 11-9 to take the one-point victory and hand Brunswick their first loss of the season.
