The Brunswick football team may not have gone as far as it planned in the state tournament with a loss to Dacula in the second round, but the Pirates had a very successful season going 11-1 thanks to excellent play on both sides of the ball.
The Pirates went undefeated in regular season play and had a dominant win in the first round of the playoffs with a 60-26 victory against Tucker. Overall Brunswick outscored its opponents 443-164.
Senior Chuckobe Hill led the ground attack with 17 touchdowns this year. He ran the ball 139 times for 1,037 yards, at a rate of 7.5 yards per carry. Senior Ree Simmons also found the end zone plenty of times with 11 scores. He ran the ball 110 times for 649 yards. Senior Leon Charlton carried 41 times for 378 yards with eight touchdowns. Junior Jayden Drayton scored five touchdowns and ran the ball 30 times for 184 yards. Senior Pat Leggett rushed 26 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns.
Brunswick featured two quarterbacks this season, led by senior Jeffery Waye who went 40-for-81 passing for 865 yards, with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, while posting a quarterback rating of 101.1 Junior Sutton Ellis went 42-for-83 for 689 yards, while throwing for five touchdowns and eight picks.
Sophomore Terry Mitchell was the top receiver this season with 17 catches for 550 yards and six touchdowns. Junior Kevin Thomas had 12 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown. Hill caught 13 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns.
Leading the defense was sophomore linebacker Devin Smith who had six sacks to go along with 61 tackles, including 16 tackles for a loss. Senior linebacker Adam Mweemba had 73 total tackles including three tackles for a loss. He also posted two sacks and two interceptions. Junior defensive back Ivan Johnson had 60 tackles with one for a loss. Senior Staffon Stanley had 66 tackles and an interception.
Also posting sacks were junior Zion Turner with two sacks; junior Kashawn Thomas with three sacks; senior Jameer Lang with two sacks; senior Drayton Laury with two sacks; sophomore River Creel with a sack; junior Jayden Drayton with a sack and senior Jonathen Joseph Sanderson with a sack.
Returning lettermen and new recruits will keep that lone loss in mind as they strive for perfection again next year.
