City of Hinesville issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.
In accordance with public notice requirements, the City of Hinesville and its public works partner ESG Operations, Inc. hereby reports that a wastewater spill occurred on Monday November 15 at 8:27PM to November 16th at 4:38 AM.
Crews estimate that 49,100 gallons of wastewater escaped from the headworks at the Hinesville – Fort Stewart Water Pollution Control Plant, located at 629 Hero Road. The spillage was a result of a failed bar screen.
The water was escaping from the covered bar screen through the bottom penetrations at the base of the bar screen. Through quick action, crews responded and stopped the spill. The surrounding headworks were cleaned and treated with lime. Crews also initiated a stream sampling protocol associated with a major spill. This event has been reported to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD).
