Camden County - GA issued the following announcement on Oct. 4.

Camden County Fire Rescue (CCFR) is joining the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in celebrating October 3-9, 2021, as Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

“We want all Camden County residents to learn the sounds of fire safety during Fire Prevention Week,” said Camden County Fire Rescue Chief Terry Smith. “This is something that we could easily take for granted, but it is important for every member of your household to know what to do when they hear the sounds of a smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.”

Camden County Fire Rescue wants to share safety tips to help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.”

  • A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
  • Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
“What do the sounds mean? Is there a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? Knowing the difference can save you, your home, and your family,” said Lorraine Carli, vice-president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA.

To assist citizens with the proper placement of smoke alarms, CCFR offers a free smoke alarm installation program. Any Camden County resident can request to have two smoke alarms installed in their residence for free by Camden County Fire Rescue personnel once every ten years. For more information on the smoke alarm installation program, contact Camden County Fire Rescue at 912-729-3911.

More information will be available on the Camden County Fire Rescue Facebook and Twitter pages throughout the week. Due to COVID-19 precautions, limited fire safety presentation opportunities are available. If your group or organization would like to learn more about possible presentations, please contact Fire Rescue Headquarters at 912-729-3911.
