COASTAL GEORGIA COLLEGE ATHLETICS: Four Mariners Record Career-Highs in Victory over Warriors

Coastal Georgia College Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 22. 

The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (14-1, 1-1) defeated the Webber International Warriors (9-6, 0-2) to pick up their first Sun Conference win of the 2021 season. The Mariners defeated the Warriors in three sets, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16.

Notable Stats:

  • Giovana Larregui Lopez recorded 13 kills on 18 attempts to total a career-high .611 hitting percentage. She also recorded nine digs and a block assist.
  • Rebecca Brown set a 5-1 and recorded 39 assists, her career-high with the Mariners.  
  • Samantha Johnston totaled a career-high 10 kills and a .267 hitting percentage.  
  • Sydney Martin recorded six kills and a .556 hitting percentage.
  • Libero Skylar Gribben recorded 13 digs, her second-best in the Mariners uniform.
  • Elena Gkiourda and Meghan Oliver each recorded three block assists. Gkiourda added seven kills, a career-high.
  • Oliver recorded a .500 hitting percentage after totaling six kills and zero errors on 12 attempts.  
Set One

Despite trading blows through the first 10 points of the match, Coastal Georgia was able to take a three-point set lead fairly early that they maintained and extended on the entire set. They pushed their lead to eight when they secured the 25-17 victory in set one. Gkiourda showed her offensive prowess in set one recording five kills and maintaining a .571 attack percentage. Brown recorded 14 assists in set one and Lopez added two aces to the Mariner's points. Libero, Gribben led the match with five digs.

As a team, the Mariners struggled with serve receive in the first set, yet it did not directly cost them any points. Impressively, the Mariners totaled a .560 hitting percentage as a team.

Set Two

The Mariners got off to a slow start in the second set, allowing the Warriors to take a 4-1 lead. Coastal Georgia quickly responded and tied the game 6-6. Until late in the set, the Warriors and the Mariners dueled back and forth. It was evident that the Mariners did not expect such a strong offense from the Warriors. At the end of the second set, the Warriors were still hitting for .234 which is significantly above the opponent hitting percentage average, 0.61 that the Mariners have held their opponents to.  

Coastal Georgia had impressive numbers in set two. As a team, the Mariners were hitting for .464 after the second set. In the entire second set, the Mariners only recorded one hitting error. In addition, the Mariners defense added 14 digs in the second set as well as four block assists.

Larregui Lopez was the offensive leader in set two with five kills, teammate and counterpart outside Johnston recorded four herself.

Set Three

Larregui Lopez again led the offensive charge recorded five kills in the third and final set. Her impressive .611 hitting percentage was the result of only allowing one hitting error in the first and third sets. Martin and Oliver each recorded three kills out of the middle in the third set. All three of the above-mentioned Mariners recorded above .500 hitting percentages.

The Mariners won the third set 25-16 after handling the Warriors with ease. As a team, they totaled 44 kills, a 0.347 hitting percentage, 42 assists, seven aces, 42 digs, 10 block assists, and one block solo.
