Southeast Georgia Health System is pleased to welcome Shanna R. Welgraven, DO, a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist, to Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Camden Campus medical staff.

After graduating from the University of California with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, Welgraven earned her medical degree at Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. She then completed her obstetrician and gynecology residency at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

“I treat young women, women my age and women in their later years,” explains Welgraven. “From delivering babies to surgical procedures, I do it all.”

Welgraven describes her approach to practicing medicine as treating patients like family. “When you come to see me, I’m going to treat you like you are my sister or mom. I spend a lot of time getting to know my patients, where they are from, what they and their spouses do, and their health goals. I enjoy getting to know who they are as a person.”

Welgraven chose obstetrics and gynecology because she is passionate about helping women. “When a patient needs surgery and I see them post-op and they tell me it has completely transformed their life because of what I did for them, it fills me with joy.”

She adds, “I love helping women who are having difficulties getting pregnant. When I see them for a few months, then they come in for that first OB appointment after a positive pregnancy test, it is the best feeling. I love my job and I cannot imagine doing anything else.”

A recent newlywed, Welgraven and her husband, Kyle, are expecting their first baby in July. “We chose to move to St. Marys to start our family.”

Welgraven’s services include annual well-woman visits, cancer screenings, family planning and birth control management, contraceptive implants and IUDs, infertility treatment, prenatal care, labor and delivery services, treatment of pelvic pain and urinary disorders, and management of menopausal symptoms.

Welgraven joins fellow obstetrician and gynecologist, Bradley W. Newton, MD, and certified nurse midwife, Cynthia Wallace, RN, MN, CNM, at Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Obstetrics & Gynecology in St. Marys. Visit sghs.org/obgyn or call 912-540-6750 to schedule an appointment.
