Savannah Chatham County Public School System issued the following announcement on Jan. 25.

The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education will meet on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM for the purpose of holding Public Hearings #1 and #2, respectively, regarding the Closure of Facility for Port Wentworth Elementary School located at 507 South Coastal Highway, Port Wentworth, GA 31407.

The eventual closure would mean that students currently enrolled at Port Wentworth Elementary School will be relocated to other existing schools including Garden City Elementary School, Otis J. Brock Elementary School, or Rice Creek School.  The identified schools have available space for a specified number of students and will require no expansion at this time.  Student reassignment will depend on three key factors: 1) student residence; 2) existing school capacity (so as not to create overcrowding and to allow room for future expansion); and 3) transportation constraints.  The new student assignments will allow students/families to remain together as much as possible, as well as consider a natural grade transition where applicable.

The Port Wentworth Elementary School has been phased out per the specifications of the Georgia Department of Education and will no longer be available for instructional use.  At the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year, the facility will be utilized administratively to support operational needs identified by the school district.  The public hearings will be held at Whitney Administrative Complex- Building G, 2 Laura Avenue in Savannah and are open to the public. Interested citizens are encouraged to attend and may provide written suggestions or comments to the Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah and County of Chatham, 208 Bull Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or in person by attending the scheduled Public Hearings #1 and #2 on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.
