Savannah Chatham County Public School System issued the following announcement on May 31.
The Georgia Power Sports Awards Luncheon, presented by the Savannah Sports Council, is an annual banquet honoring local athletes and partners that have excelled at their given sports or business. Among the honorees was longtime track and field coach Ed Jinks, who coached at Woodville, was given the John F. Hodges O.A.S.I.S. Award representing Outstanding Achievement in Sports in Savannah. Also honored were two SCCPSS students, who each recieved $1000 scholarships to continue their education.
Adiah Gray, of New Hampstead High School, participated in four sports including Volleyball, Flag Football, Basketball, and Soccer. Adiah was captain of the volleyball team for three years and was named MVP this past season. For basketball, she was awarded the most improved player and for soccer, she was named the most versatile player of her team. In the classroom Adiah carried a 3.8 GPA and was an A and B Honor Roll Student. After graduation, Adiah is considering the following schools, Louisville, Duke, Georgia Southern, North Carolina State, and USC. She plans to major in Business or Literature.
Alfred E. Beach High School senior Ameer Phillips participated in four sports while at Beach High School including Football, Wrestling, Soccer, and Track and Field. Ameer was captain of the football and soccer team and was named Football Defensive Player of the Year for his region. Ameer has been inducted into the Alfred Ely Beach High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In the classroom, Ameer carried a 3.7 GPA. He was a member of the Diagnostic Phlebotomy Program and volunteered at the Beach High School Screening Clinic. Ameer has mentored incoming students and participated in various food drives in the community. After graduation, Ameer plans to attend Savannah State University where he will major in Biology and be a member of the Tiger football team.
