Statewide, Georgia public schools served more than 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary levels had the most students, with 787,206 (45.9%), followed by 388,733 (22.7%) in middle schools and 539,092 (31.4%) in high schools.
Chronic absenteeism remains a persistent problem in Georgia since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. To address this, GaDOE has rolled out a statewide plan featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and focused support for districts with especially high needs to improve daily attendance.
In 2025, state lawmakers updated Georgia’s school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The new legislation also requires expanded attendance reporting and aligns with initiatives supporting alternative diploma options for students.
As of 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 14:1, which is lower than the national ratio of 15:1.
