Georgia public school enrollment exceeded 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary grades had the most students at 787,206 (45.9%), followed by middle schools with 388,733 (22.7%) and high schools with 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism continues to affect Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students absent for at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reports. To address this, GaDOE has initiated statewide efforts using a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness initiative, and targeted assistance for high-need districts aiming to improve daily attendance.

In 2025, Georgia legislators updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The new law institutes additional reporting requirements and increases alignment with alternative diploma options.

As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio was approximately 14:1, which is lower than the national average of 15:1.
