Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant concern in Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education found. Efforts from GaDOE have included a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide awareness campaign, and increased support for districts with higher absentee rates to encourage regular attendance.
In 2025, state lawmakers in Georgia approved an update to school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The new statute introduces additional reporting obligations and works in conjunction with alternative diploma programs.
By 2026, Georgia posted an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, which was more favorable than the national average of 15:1.
