Mariners Receive Named Scholarships to Honor the Memories of Coach Gerald Cox and Lucy Fendig

Coastal Georgia Athletics announced the recipients of the newest named scholarship awards including the Coach Cox Memorial Scholarship, Lucy Wynn Fendig Women’s Tennis Scholarship and the Hites-Thomas Scholarship.

Basketball athlete Anthony Duncan received the Coach Cox Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was set up to honor the memory of Coach Gerald Cox and is awarded to a men’s basketball student-athlete who embodies the S.A.I.L.S. motto (Scholarship, Athletics, Integrity, Leadership and Sportsmanship) while maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Gerald Cox coached for 32 years at Coastal Georgia before his retirement in 2014. Cox led the Mariners to seven conference championships at the JUCO level and reached the Sweet 16 in the NJCAA National Tournament in 1985-86 and 2001-02. The floor in the Howard Coffin Gym is named after Coach Cox. In March of 2020, he was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame.

Women’s tennis athlete Danielle Silvan is the recipient of the Lucy Wynn Fendig Scholarship. This scholarship was set up to recognize deserving athletes on the women’s tennis team at Coastal Georgia. To be considered for this award the student-athlete must be active and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Fendig grew up in Glynn County. She attended Glynn Academy where she made a name for herself and eventually went to the University of Georgia on a scholarship for tennis. Following a stint on the pro circuit, she came back to St. Simons Island where she opened her own shop at the King and Prince and would give tennis lessons.

The Hites-Thomas Scholarship was awarded to 17 student-athletes on campus. To receive this award a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA after 50 academic credit hours. At least one student-athlete from every sport received this award. The recipients are as follows:

Men’s Basketball:  Kenny Brown

Men’s Golf: Marcus Reynolds, Zayne Hilderbrand

Women’s Golf: Kristen Crooms, Kelly Buker, Presley Smith

Softball:  Bryce Peacock, McCall Maret, Elizabeth McGovern, Reagan Thomas, Malarie Peacock, Aniston Johnson

Men’s Tennis:  Felix Arroyo Viglino, Aymeric Bruno, Santiago Speranza 

Women’s Tennis: Chloe Do Lago, Sofia Gonzalez

Volleyball: Natalia Wilhelm Heguaburu

The following eight golf and tennis student-athletes have been awarded other named scholarships to honor Jack and Mary Dinos, Christian Liggin, Gail King, Terry Thomas and Marta Torrey.
