To address the issue, GaDOE initiated a statewide campaign featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness initiative, and targeted interventions for districts most in need to improve daily attendance rates.

In 2025, state lawmakers updated Georgia’s attendance legislation, prohibiting expulsion for truancy alone. The new law also incorporates expanded reporting requirements and coordination with alternative pathways to help students earn diplomas.

By 2026, Georgia averaged about 14 students per teacher, placing it ahead of the national student-teacher ratio of 15:1.
