More than 1.7 million students attend public schools in Georgia, according to data from the state’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 education report. Most were in elementary (787,206 students, or 45.9%), with middle school enrollment at 388,733 (22.7%) and high school at 539,092 students (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism has persisted in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Department of Education said. Efforts to improve attendance include a real-time dashboard, statewide awareness campaigns, and focused support in districts with the greatest need. GaDOE recently launched a multifaceted initiative to curb this trend.
Georgia’s legislature approved a change to school attendance laws in 2025, prohibiting expulsions for absenteeism alone, and introducing updated reporting duties along with expanded paths toward earning a diploma. Read more about it here.
As of 2026, Georgia maintains an average student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 14:1, better than the national rate of 15:1.
