Camden County – GA issued the following announcement on Mar. 4.
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) has declared March 7-11, 2022, to be Flood Safety Preparedness Week and Camden County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) urges all Camden County residents to take time to learn about and prepare for the possibility of flood events.
“We want to encourage all Camden County residents to prepare for the possibility of flooding,” said EMA Director Chuck White. “It is important to make plans and determine if flood insurance is needed for your home and property.”
A Flood Awareness Tool is available on the Camden County website. The online tool is designed to help planning officials, decision makers, and current and future residents make informed decisions to prepare for and reduce the impacts of flooding. Camden County experiences the effects of sea level rise, storm surge, regular riverine flooding, and king tides.
Throughout the week, Camden County citizens will learn about flood hazards, flood safety, and preparation steps including:
- Flood Safety, Preparedness, and Awareness: Make a plan, build a ready kit and communicate with your household and community to so you’re prepared in case of a flood.
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Never attempt to drive through floodwaters. Two feet of moving water can carry away a full-sized car.
- Flood Hazards: Stay out of floodwaters if possible. The water can be contaminated or electrically stalls. However, if your car stalls in rapidly rising waters, leave the vehicle and seek higher ground.
- NWS Water Resources and Services: Many homeowner’s insurance policies don’t cover floods. Make sure you’re financially ready for a flood event by visiting www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program and remember: flood insurance takes 30 days to take effect, so sooner is better than later.
- Partner Services: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) can provide you with resources and tips to help you prepare for a flood.
