Chronic absenteeism remains a significant concern for Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of instructional days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. The GaDOE introduced a statewide initiative that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide awareness campaign, and concentrated support for districts that need the most assistance to raise attendance rates.
In 2025, legislation was passed in Georgia updating school attendance policy, prohibiting expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The new law introduces further reporting obligations and is coordinated with programs enabling students to graduate via alternative methods.
Georgia recorded an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1 in 2026, according to state data. This figure is below the national average of 15:1.
