Glynn County announced on May 8 that archaeological personnel will conduct field investigations starting Monday, May 11, in areas along Demere Road, Kings Way, and Sea Island Road as part of the St. Simons Island Gateway Project.
The investigation is a component of the project development and environmental review process. Archaeological research activities are being conducted to evaluate potential historic and cultural resources within the project area in coordination with state and federal review requirements.
Residents and visitors may see personnel performing hand excavation and archaeological testing throughout portions of the project corridor near intersections including Demere Road and Sea Island Road, Kings Way and Sea Island Road, as well as Demere Road and F.J. Torras Causeway. The field work is expected to last approximately five days.
According to Glynn County officials, “these activities are routine and necessary components of infrastructure planning and environmental compliance efforts.” The county also said every effort will be made to minimize disruptions during this phase. For further information or questions about the investigation process, residents can contact Glynn County Engineering Services at 912-554-7248.
